What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
- Our highly qualified and dedicated teachers deliver differentiated, explicit teaching tailored to meet students’ individual learning needs.

Our highly successful sporting teams participating in gala days, with talented students supported to attend representative trials and participate in selective teams. We collaborate with neighbouring small schools to form competitive squads and encourage student participation in a wide variety of sporting pursuits.

Our students actively engage in the Ellalong Film Festival, showcasing creativity, teamwork and technical skills.

Transition programs support students moving into enrichment classes at high school, ensuring continuity of learning and growth.

We proudly audition for Starstruck and the Cessnock Community of Great Public Schools Choir for those looking to perform at a higher level, while our school Dance Group and Choir promotes artistic expression and teamwork.

Transition activities are designed to assist students in adapting successfully to new learning phases, fostering resilience and confidence.

We support students to develop leadership skills through structured opportunities, fostering confidence and responsibility, such as peer led sport, peer support and peer mediators.

Our student Aboriginal Education Team lead initiatives within our school to promote cultural understanding and appreciation across the school.
We also celebrate the high performance achievements our students pursue beyond school, such as cattle parading, dirt bike competitions, boat racing, and equestrian sports, recognising and valuing diverse talents and interests.
Our students participate in state-wide opportunities including:
- The Premier’s Spelling Bee which promotes our students’ vocabulary development and attention to detail in competitive settings.
- The Premier’s Debating Challenge that helps our students to build logical arguments and confidence in public speaking.
- The Public Speaking Competition encourages students to confidently articulate their ideas, engage with diverse perspectives, and develop persuasive and entertaining speaking skills.
- Opportunity Class Placements for selected Year Five students, providing accelerated academic pathways.
- ‘Film by the Vines’, offering a platform for creative storytelling and media skills development. Talented film makers may achieve selection in the prestigious ‘Film By Invitation’, an exclusive showcase of the most outstanding student films from across all ‘Film By’ festivals.
- Our talented athletes proudly represent our school, zone, region, and state through the PSSA pathways.
- Selected students with are invited to attend the HPGE Hunter Super Nova Camp. This camp caters to High Potential and Gifted Education students from primary schools across the Hunter region.
